What should I consider when buying a paintball marker?

The first question you should ask yourself as a player is " What kind of paintball player am I? ". By this is meant, on which terrain do you move in the paintball sport. - If you're looking for more of the young, aggressive-looking tournament Junky's adrenaline and action on the Supair field, or maybe you're in the Woodland & Scenario player category, you're more interested in a realistic-look marker in the form of an assault rifle or a pistol ?

When this initial question has been answered, you have already taken a big step towards your new paintball marker and are definitely on the way to finding a model that will make your personal game as fun as possible.

How are tournament markers different from Woodland markers?

This question is answered quite simply. Paintball markers for the tournament sport are characterized by a very minimalist design. It's all about performance and function, less in appearance and martial appearance. The modern Paintball Tournament Marker is a high-tech product that is weight-optimized and crammed with loads of sensors, displays and other features that make sure you get the best possible performance from the device.

In short, a tournament marker is about weight, accuracy, air efficiency, handling and overall performance.

Woodland paintball markers, on the other hand, are a completely different house number. They are on the one hand cheaper, which in turn leaves less air for things such as lightweight construction or additional features. For these models, the manufacturers rely primarily on optics and robust workmanship. Most Woodland players not only buy for performance, but also for optics. The marker should look as realistic as possible and is therefore often similar to known weapon models such as the AR15 assault rifle , the MP5 submachine gun or handguns such as pistols.
Since the Woodland paintball markers are used in a completely different environment than tournament markers , they must also be much more stable. On Woodland fields one not infrequently encounters concrete subsoil, deep ditches, mud, dust and other external influences. In this environment, many tournament markers give up quickly, as they are just designed for use on relatively clean and obstacle-free supra fields. So you can say, Woodland & Scenario Markers are work tools for rough in harsher environments.

Another important aspect is the assembly of accessories. Tournament markers are, as mentioned above, kept simple. It is targeted over the run, and that's it. Replica markers used in the forest, on the other hand, are used for mounting accessories such as sighting devices, carrying handles, etc.
Paintball players who want to use such a marker usually still equip and customize it, which is much better possible with Woodland markers than with the simpler tournament markers.

How does a paintball marker work?

In principle, there are 3 common operating principles in paintball markers, on the one hand single loader, the so-called pump action markers , then semi-automatic blowback markers , and finally the very high-quality e-pneumatics, which are mainly found in the tournament area. Below we explain the small but fine differences in function.

Pumpaction paintball marker

The classic, inexpensive starter markers , this is a single loader beidem the player must operate a reload lever for each shot. This is usually under the barrel and must be pulled back once and then pushed forward again. This pumping action, on the one hand, restores the marker system and ensures that the next shot can be fired, and at the same time, a new color ball is also loaded into the barrel. A very simple system that is robust and inexpensive at the same time. Ideal for newcomers.

The classic blowback paintball marker

Blowback markers are all models which are self-tensioning due to the air used during the shot. These paintball markers are semi-automatic, meaning each time you press the trigger a paintball is fired. Blowback markers all work on the same principle, even if there are different valve and bolt systems.

A heavy bolt, the so-called hammer, is accelerated by means of spring force or air and stings a counterpressure valve, similar to what one would expect from a bicycle tire, for example. The outflowing air moves the hammer back to the starting position and thus starts the reloading cycle. At the same time, a portion of the outflowing air is diverted over the bolt in the inner marker and directed into the ammunition chamber in which the paintball ball is located. This air then accelerates the ball out of the barrel. After the ball is shot, and the hammer is locked back into its original position, the marker is ready to fire immediately. It all happens in a fraction of a second and is almost imperceptible to the naked eye. These markers can easily reach a cadence of 8-10 rounds per second in some cases.

E-Pneumatic Paintball Markers - The High End Equipment for Tournament Athletes

The premier class paintball markers form the so-called E-pneumatic . Although these also work with air, like all other marker models, they are distributed and processed quite differently inside the marker.
Today's electropneumatics all have a low-pressure regulator, which in the first step ensures that the air with which the marker operates is already lowered at the inlet to the marker to about 20% of the working pressure that a normal blowback marker uses. In the interior of the E-pneumatic paintball marker, there are even more differences in the shooting sequence via the valves and the bolt. The air is distributed much gentler on the ball, which allows the use of much brittle paintballs.
To explain the most important feature of an E-Pneumatic in one sentence, these markers use the same amount of air, but they use it differently and much more effectively. It uses less pressure with significantly more volume.
